6MP

Basically, 6-MP is an oral chemotherapy drug that was found out, by accident, to be good for Crohn's. Like most of the anti-metabolite drugs, it interferes with the proliferation of immune system cells in the intestine, and that means they can do less damage.

Asacol

Asacol is used to treat chronic inflammation of the mucous membranes in the large intestine. Asacol checks the inflammation in the large intestine mucous membrane.

SIDE EFFECTS: The most common side effects of Asacol are headaches, nausea, stomachache, diarrhea and skin reactions. Other, less common, side effects include fever, chest pains, tiredness and joint pains.

Flagyl

Flagyl is an antibiotic effective against anaerobic bacteria and certain parasites. Anaerobic bacteria are single-cell living organisms that thrive in low oxygen environments and can cause disease in the abdomen (bacterial peritonitis), liver (liver abscess), and pelvis (abscess of the ovaries and the fallopian tubes). Giardia lamblia and ameba are parasites that can cause abdominal pain and chronic diarrhea in infected individuals. Flagyl selectively blocks some of the cell functions in these microorganisms, resulting in their demise.

SIDE EFFECTS: Flagyl is a valuable antibiotic and is generally well tolerated with appropriate use. Serious side effects of Flagyl are rare and include seizures and damage of nerves resulting in numbness and tingling of extremities (peripheral neuropathy). Flagyl should be stopped if these symptoms appear. Minor side effects include nausea, headaches, loss of appetite, a metallic taste, and rarely a rash. Alcoholic intakes can cause serious damages while on Flagyl!

Imurel

Imurel is classified as an immunosuppressant medication. Imurel is used to suppress the immune system in patients who have had kidney transplants. Although its exact mechanism of action in rheumatoid arthritis is not known, its effect in suppressing the immune system appears to decrease the activity of this illness.

SIDE EFFECTS: The most common serious side effects of Imurel involve the blood elements and gastrointestinal system. Imurel can cause serious lowering of the white blood cell count, resulting in an increased risk of infections. This can reverse when the dose is reduced or temporarily discontinued. Imurel can cause nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite, which can resolve when the dose is reduced or divided through the day. Imurel can also cause liver toxicity. All patients taking Imurel require regular blood testing for blood counts and liver function tests for monitoring. Other side effects encountered less frequently include fatigue, hair loss, joint pains, and diarrhea.

Remicade

Adult Crohn's Disease and REMICADE

There's help for Crohn's control.

If you suffer from Crohn's disease, you may be familiar with the cycle of recurrent flare-ups and treatment. REMICADE can help you achieve Crohn's control by helping to put flare-ups on hold and to keep them there.

Crohn’s disease can occur in children as well.  .

Imagine putting flare-ups on hold.

REMICADE has been proven to reduce the signs and symptoms of Crohn’s disease and induce and maintain remission in patients with moderate to severe Crohn's whose disease is still active despite treatment with other therapies.

  1. REMICADE is approved for moderate to severe Crohn's disease in adults-and-children who haven't responded well to other therapies.
  2. REMICADE has also been shown to reduce the number of draining enterocutaneous and rectovaginal fistulas and to maintain fistula closure.

For many people, REMICADE can actually help put Crohn's flare-ups on hold and keep them there. Individual results may vary.

If you have moderate to severe Crohn's and your disease is still active despite treatment with other therapies, ask your gastroenterologist if REMICADE is right for you.

Individual results may vary. Talk to your doctor to see if REMICADE is right for you. Please read the Medication Guide and discuss any questions or symptoms with your doctor.

REMICADE and Pediatric Crohn’s Disease

If your child has been diagnosed with moderate to severe pediatric Crohn’s disease, or if he or she is currently on medications but is still experiencing symptoms, including stomach pain, diarrhea, and weight loss or flare-ups more than two times per year, talk to his or her doctor about treatment with REMICADE.

How REMICADE works

REMICADE is an advanced treatment that works differently from conventional medications. It’s a protein that blocks a substance called TNF-alpha, which can cause inflammation in the intestines. REMICADE helps control this underlying cause of inflammation and can help get your child back to feeling better in as little as two weeks.

How REMICADE is given

REMICADE is given as an intravenous (IV) infusion by a healthcare professional, and administration takes at least two hours.  The IV will be attached to your child’s arm or hand, and REMICADE will be infused directly into the bloodstream.

After the first three doses, your child will need to receive REMICADE only once every eight weeks. That could be as few as six times a year.

How REMICADE can help

In a yearlong clinical study, pediatric Crohn’s patients who began treatment with REMICADE experienced the following:

  • Rapid symptom improvement, or “response”
  • Long-term periods of no symptoms or very few symptoms, or "remission"
  • Reduction or elimination of steroid use

In addition, almost 9 out of 10 (88%) children experienced symptom improvement soon (Week 10) after starting treatment with REMICADE. And for most of those children, symptom relief lasted for the duration of the study – through one year.

Individual results may vary. Talk to your child’s doctor to see if REMICADE is right for your child. Please read the Medication Guide and discuss any questions or symptoms with your child’s doctor.

Talking to your child about treatment with REMICADE may not be easy. Read some useful information and tips on explaining REMICADE to your child so you can help put his or her mind at ease.
